š§Did You Know?
Why do we keep messing with our clocks twice a year?
The idea of making the most of summer daylight goes back to 1784, when Benjamin Franklin joked that people could save on candles by rising earlier.
Then came William Willett in 1907. Annoyed by people āsleeping throughā bright mornings, he self-published The Waste of Daylight and lobbied Parliament. His plan faced fierce opposition and never became law during his lifetime.
Everything changed in 1916, during the First World War. Germany moved the clocks to save coal, and the UK followed suit with the Summer Time Act of 1916. In those days, the shift ran from May 21 to October 1.
In 1972, another British Summer Time Act introduced the familiar routineāspring forward in late March, fall back in late October.
Some argue scrapping clock changes would help the economyāothers believe itās sticking with them that brings the benefits.
Iām curious what you think. Hit reply and let me know.
