Hi friends,
I understand why you need a training contract. But most are making it more than it is supposed to be — a way of qualifying.
What happens when you do qualify? You’re on to the next chase? And when you eventually achieve that, what’s next?
⭐️ Here’s an interesting concept:
The year is 2006. We are in one of the world’s best universities — Harvard. This is where psychologist Tal Ben-Shahar first notices the phenomenon called the arrival fallacy, while teaching Positive Psychology.
He observes that despite the impressive accomplishments of high achieving students, they were often unhappy and stressed, believing that achieving their academic goals would bring them ultimate happiness. This is never the case.
Fast forward to 2023.
We are in London, a bustling epicentre of commerce and ingenuity, and a prime location for legal professionals.
You are a law student who works industriously to finish university with a first-class degree. You learn about what one must do to qualify, and become fixated on securing a training contract.
You spend countless days and nights learning about the process, the applications, the psychometric tests, the vacation schemes, and the assessment centres.
You apply yourself and meticulously participate in every event you can possibly find, developing exceptional commercial acumen in the process.
You work on your craft day in and day out while also managing the university workload. Despite the fact that you are sacrificing everything in the process, including your relationships and your health, you keep telling yourself:
“I’ll be happy when I get that training contract. It will all be worth it.”
On one particular morning, after numerous interviews, assessment centres, and rejections, your phone buzzes at precisely 9:00 AM. You pick it up, and there’s an email from your favourite firm.
They’re offering you a training contract. Your hard work officially paid off!
After the initial five minutes of overwhelming happiness, an unexpected emptiness sets in. Instead of feeling fulfilled, you realise you're left feeling lost and hollow, contrary to the happiness you had been promising yourself for years.
“Maybe it’s just stress.”
You dust yourself off and realise you have several obligations due soon. You tell yourself it will all get better, especially once you get qualified. And so the cycle continues.
Many of us are guilty of this.
“It will all be good once I get a training contract.”
“I’ll be happy once I’m qualified.”
"I'll be satisfied once I have a six-figure salary."
“I’ll be happy once I buy my dream house.”
"I'll be content once I make partner."
“I’ll be happy once I’m retired.”
Life is a beautiful journey, and while goals are important, it is essential to enjoy the process and the experiences that come with it.
True happiness is found in our continued efforts to achieve a goal rather than the actual attainment of the goal itself.
Mahatma Gandhi
It’s all about the journey, not the destination. Be happy now.
Until next week,
