Simranjeet’s Tips for Vacation Schemes
Most of you are already familiar with Simranjeet Kaur Mann. If you’re not, you will find a lot of valuable tips on her YouTube channel. She participated in three vacation schemes and successfully converted two of them into training contract offers. She is now a qualified lawyer.
A vacation scheme is a two-way street. Most people think you’re only there to be assessed. But you’re also there to assess if the firm is the right fit for you.
Simranjeet Kaur Mann
1. Prepare and research.
You need to understand the practice area(s) of the firm and its latest developments. You also need to be aware of the clients and the type of work the firm does for them.
2. Look out for opportunities, offer to help, and overdeliver.
Think about how you can make other people’s lives easier (i.e if you’re doing a research task, include sources).
Even if you're advised not to dedicate too much time to a task, always ensure you complete it to the highest standard.
3. Keep a notebook with you at all times.
During your final interview, you will likely be asked reflective questions such as:
“How has your view of the firm changed since your vacation scheme started?”
“Has the firm matched your expectations?”
What was the most challenging task you worked on?”
“How did you approach that task?”
“What would you do to make the vacation scheme better?”
Keeping a diary of what you did will ensure you have answers to those questions. You should note down the tasks you completed, the individuals you interacted with, what stood out to you, and your likes and dislikes.
4. Stay focused.
Keep your phone away so you can stay focused. This is not the time to scroll TikTok. You have a week or two to prove yourself, and you are assessed at all times. You need to maintain professionalism at all times.
